The Position 

The Lead Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for assisting the Fleet Supervisor in assigning and reviewing the work of the Heavy Equipment section of Sonoma Water. Work is performed at the fleet maintenance facility and in the field, which may, at times, be under unfavorable environmental conditions. Responsibilities include:

  • Directing and leading the work of the Heavy Equipment Technician and other fleet staff
  • Setting daily priorities for the shop
  • Maintaining information in Asset Works and on shop work orders
  • Scheduling vehicle maintenance and CHP BIT inspections and repair work
  • Addressing onsite maintenance requests and calls from the field, which can include traveling to remote locations
  • Addressing changing priorities and re-setting the shop schedule accordingly

The ideal candidate will have the ability to communicate with staff at all levels, can build positive relationships with fellow employees and vendors, and will possess:

  • Significant experience diagnosing and repairing medium/heavy duty trucks, tractors, loaders, backhoes, trailers, and miscellaneous equipment
  • Experience leading/supervising, especially in the automotive maintenance field
  • Experience repairing diesel, hydraulic, and electrical equipment
  • Knowledge of standard heavy equipment diagnostic and repair protocols
  • General office skills and experience using Asset Works and Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook
  • The ability to be a self-starter who is responsive, adaptable, and can re-prioritize when needed

Sonoma Water is a special district formed by the California State Legislature in 1949 and is responsible for providing a safe and reliable water supply to its customers in Sonoma and Marin counties. Sonoma Water also maintains 75 miles of flood control channels and provides sanitation services. Employing approximately 250 employees, Sonoma Water consists of five divisions including Engineering and Resource Planning, Environmental Resources and Public Affairs, Water/Wastewater Operations, Maintenance, and Administrative Services. Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities listed above. Normally, this would include the ability to read and write English and perform basic arithmetic calculations at a level sufficient to perform the duties of the position, and three years of experience in the repair of a wide variety of on/off road equipment, trailers, and medium/heavy duty trucks.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position. A State of California Class "A" commercial driver's license is required on completion of the probationary period.

Certifications and Licenses: The ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician.

California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET) I and II Course are requires on completion of the probationary period.

A State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair Class "A" Lamp Adjuster and Class "A" Brake Adjuster licenses are required on the completion of the probationary period.

Special Requirements: Possession of small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of: methods, tools, testing instruments, parts, and equipment used in the major repair, replacement, installation, and overhaul of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy duty trucks, including emergency vehicles, man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and mobile); safety diagnosis, and preventive maintenance inspection methods and techniques; techniques and  methods of repairing, replacing, installing, and overhauling of on/off road equipment, trucks, and related component parts, including diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel engines, carburetors, hydraulic and electrical systems, fuel injection systems, transmissions, and differentials; the theory, care, and operation of diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy duty trucks.

Ability to: perform specified tasks on the computerized system; assign the work of lower-level staff; diagnose and locate mechanical and safety problems, and determine appropriate corrective action; repair, replace, remove, install, and overhaul of on/off road heavy equipment and medium/heavy trucks, including emergency vehicles, man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and mobile),, and related component parts without supervision; effectively use hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and machines in the repair, replacement, removal, installation, and overhaul of heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, and related component parts; perform emission testing and certification; read and write English,  interpret manufacturers' specifications; use computer to organize date and generate reports; perform arithmetic calculations; follow oral and written instructions; work effectively with customers and vendors; work under varying field and weather conditions, and on weekends.
