Description of the Job:
The Maintenance Mechanic performs skilled work in the preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment. The Maintenance Mechanic assists equipment operators in understanding and performing routine maintenance tasks associated with their equipment. The Maintenance Mechanic may inspect equipment from time to time at the direction of the Environmental Services Supervisor, and is responsible for scheduling preventive maintenance work that is needed. The Maintenance Mechanic may be required to perform minor repairs on automotive equipment and other mechanical equipment such as motors and pumps. This individual will also be required to maintain records of work orders, inspections, and inventory of supplies. Direct supervision is provided by the Environmental Services Supervisor.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Maintain a daily work schedule of equipment repair and maintenance as required.
Perform skilled repair work on automotive and mechanical equipment;
Conduct routine servicing of automotive and heavy equipment;
Inspect and evaluate required maintenance and repairs for division vehicles and equipment;
Maintain shop area, including organization of supplies and cleaning of work area;
Maintain service records on automotive and equipment and prepared written reports as needed;
Visit job sites to perform routine repairs on equipment as needed;
Provide training for employees in the conduct of preventative maintenance tasks;
Assist with special projects when assigned, including assisting with snow removal;
Operate an automated refuse vehicle on a route when needed;
Assist with related duties in cooperation with any division or department as assigned;
Regular attendance and punctuality required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to understand and interpret the information contained in operational manuals for heavy and motorized equipment;
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
Ability to maintain written records and reports;
Ability to deal in a positive manner with the general public and with co-workers;
Ability to lift up to 60 pounds with the ability to lift lesser weights repetitively;
Ability to walk, stand, sit, lift, bend, twist, stoop, climb, kneel, reach, push, pull, talk,
hear and perform a variety of physical activities needed to accomplish the essential functions of the position;
Ability to work independently or as a team;
Ability to work outside of normal business hours when needed;
Ability to work in various weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade;
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire;
Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy and light automotive equipment;
Experience in performing routine and skilled automotive, diesel, hydraulic system and equipment repairs.
